With Dave Dennis succumbing to injury, the Waratahs had to find someone to step into the captaincy for a huge match this weekend.
Conventional thought might have been choosing veterans such as Adam Ashley-Cooper, Ben Robinson or Tatafu Polota-Nau to lead them team.
But Michael Cheika has acted with the future in mind in selecting 22 year old Michael Hooper.
There is no doubting the quality of Hooper's rugby and this speaks volumes about how he is viewed within the team. As a player who leads by example it will be intriguing to see if he steps up his game to an even higher level with this responsibility.
One thing is for sure, this is an audition.
Here's hoping he nails it.
Did Cheika make the right call?
