The Tahs have to be happy with their 41-13 win over the Lions last weekend, a dominant performance at home with no injuries can never be a bad thing.
The win, coupled with losses by the Brumbies and the Force meant that the Tahs moved from 8th to 4th and sit only one point behind the Brumbies who have played an extra game. Simply put, the Australian Conference is Cheika's to lose.
Cheika was quick to dampen talk of a top two finish stating, “what we need to do is think about the next game and not get carried away.” He's right of course, this week the Tahs have a short turnaround as they travel to Melbourne to play the Rebels on Friday night. A game that won't be easy, but is definitely winnable.
Cheika has been much more talkative this week as he slowly re-enters to media circus after his SANZAR hearing. He offered this astute summary of what his team could expect in Melbourne, "they’re going to attack us hard at the breakdown, in defence, and we’re going to have to be ready for that.”
Much like the Lions game, if the Tahs can enforce their running rugby then they should have too much firepower for the Rebels, that being said Melbourne isn't an easy road trip and it's rare to see the Rebels get blown out at home.
This week is massive for the Tahs, the following two rounds see them take on the Chiefs and the Brumbies. Getting a win will give the team much more flexibility.
Here's hoping we flog them!
